Maize–legume strip cropping effect on productivity, income, and income risk of farmers in northern Ghana

Maize (Zea mays L.)–legume intercropping is common cropping system among smallholder farmers in West Africa. However, little known about the income risk reduction associated with maize–legume strip A 3-yr study was conducted Upper and Northern regions of Ghana to determine effect on productivity, income, using a randomized complete block design five replications each region. Seven treatments were used: sole crops maize (M) cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] (C) groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) (G), combination two rows M legumes (L) (2M:2C 2M:2G), four L (2M:4C 2M:4G). Maize–legume options (2M:2L 2M:4L) average saved 90–100% agricultural land, significantly increased by threefold, reduced operating at financial loss 75% compared cropping. Smallholder farmers, especially legume Guinea savanna northern similar agro-ecologies Africa, could adopt systems (2M:4L or 2M:2L) mitigate production increase return.
